Moreover, the study also aimed to understand which attributes linked to masculinity and victimhood that were considered in the district court’s assessment.
Several themes were identified in the material and analysed through perspectives of the ideal victim (Christie 2001; Strobl 2004) and hegemonic masculinity (Connell 2008). The results showed that the male victims in this study did not seem to have a problem with presenting themselves as victims, and overall, they did not try to maintain masculinity. Moreover, there were no clear tendencies for stereotypical norms of masculinity in the material. Something that was consistently considered in the district court's assessment were characteristics of the plaintiff's statement and whether the plaintiff acted provocatively. However, the court did not seem to take into consideration the possible physical difference between the male victim and the female perpetrator. (Less)
