- Abstract
- This project examines why local materials matter and the main elements
to consider when making sustainable designs. Iceland is heavily relying on
import because of the scarcity of raw natural local materials. In the main natural materials require less energy and water use as they are less processed
and consequently become a more sustainable choice. However importing
natural materials significantly increases their energy usage making them a
less sustainable choice. Another study shows that we humans have become
disconnected from the natural world which may be to the deprivation of our
mental health. According to research the placement of outdoor seating can

play an important role in making people feel connected to nature again. By
designing outdoor furniture made out of local wood the aim of the project is
to help people experience nature in order to connect with nature again while
also showcasing the potential of local wood production in Iceland. (Less)
