Den samtida och framtida brassbandskompositionen" är ett examensarbete som syftar till att, utifrån ett tonsättarperspektiv, undersöka musik som är komponerad för brassbandstävlingar och identifiera de komponenter som behövs i både komposition och instrumentation för att skapa såväl en konstnärlig produkt som tävlingsförutsättningar.

För att genomföra detta har författaren Daniel Möllås - tillika kompositionsstudent på Diplomprogrammet (Master II) vid Musikhögskolan i Malmö - besökt sju olika brassbandstävlingar i fem europeiska länder för att dels ta del av olika sorters tävlingsmusik, dels sätta in dem i de olika sammanhang som uppstår utifrån hur tävlingarna arrangeras på dessa platser. Den samtida och framtida brassbandskompositionen" är ett examensarbete som syftar till att, utifrån ett tonsättarperspektiv, undersöka musik som är komponerad för brassbandstävlingar och identifiera de komponenter som behövs i både komposition och instrumentation för att skapa såväl en konstnärlig produkt som tävlingsförutsättningar.

För att genomföra detta har författaren Daniel Möllås - tillika kompositionsstudent på Diplomprogrammet (Master II) vid Musikhögskolan i Malmö - besökt sju olika brassbandstävlingar i fem europeiska länder för att dels ta del av olika sorters tävlingsmusik, dels sätta in dem i de olika sammanhang som uppstår utifrån hur tävlingarna arrangeras på dessa platser. Ett urval ur datainsamlingen jämförs med en av Möllås egna kompositioner som användes som obligatoriskt teststycke i de europeiska brassbandsmästerskapen 2023.

Arbetets induktiva ingång kopplas till ett hermeneutiskt perspektiv för att genomgående i arbetet jämföra delar mot helheten. Resultatet visar på betydelsen av att tonsättaren skapar förutsättningar i tävlingsmusiken för att musikerna ska kunna skapa egna tolkningar. Tonsättaren kan utelämna information för att skapa en ”enkel” notation som bjuder in till olika tolkningar, samtidigt som en alltför sparsmakad notation kan bli intetsägande om vad musikens syfte är och vilket musikaliskt budskap som ska framföras av de tävlande banden. The contemporary and future brass band composition" is a thesis which, from a composers point of view, aims to investigate music composed for brass band competitions and to identify the components needed in both composition and instrumentation, in order to create an artistic product as well as conditions for competing.

The contemporary and future brass band composition" is a thesis which, from a composers point of view, aims to investigate music composed for brass band competitions and to identify the components needed in both composition and instrumentation, in order to create an artistic product as well as conditions for competing.

To accomplish this, the author Daniel Möllås - also a composition student at the Diploma program (Master II) at Malmö Academy of Music (Sweden) - has visited seven different brass band competitions in five European countries in order to observe different kinds of test pieces and to place them in the various contexts based on how competitions are arranged in these places. A selection of data is compared to one of Möllås’ own compositions, which was used as a set test piece in the European Brass Band Championships 2023.

The inductive approach of the study is connected to a hermeneutic perspective, in order to compare parts to the whole. The result shows the importance of that the composers create conditions for the musicians to make different interpretations of the test pieces. The composer may exclude information in order to create a ”simple” notation which invites different interpretations, as well as a too fastidious notation can become bland about the music’ purpose and what musical message the competing bands are asked to convey.
