Abstract
Currently, medical social workers are required to conduct psychosocial assessments and are expected to understand the nature of the task. Through the assessment, medical social workers were also expected to make appropriate judgments that should have been scientifically grounded in a patient-safe manner and in accordance with the Patient Safety Act (SFS 2010:659). The psychosocial
assessment, with its purpose and design, had the potential to serve as a standardized assessment method. This study explored the psychosocial assessment conducted by medical social workers within somatic care and its potential to function as a

This study explored the psychosocial assessment conducted by medical social workers within somatic care and its potential to function as a
standardized assessment method using a program theoretical approach. Data were collected from 10 medical social workers through an interview template that addressed how the assessments were currently conducted and how the assessment could be improved. Through the program's theoretical approach, presented in the form of a logical model, interventions, activities, outcomes, and results of this method were identified. The aim was to explore the possibility of standardizing psychosocial assessments in somatic healthcare. Challenges included varying levels of training among healthcare social workers and the need to balance standardization
and adaptation. Standardization could enhance evidence-based practice and patient care, but an excess of standardization could reduce flexibility. Desired developments involved education, collaboration, and increased awareness of psychosocial factors in healthcare. The goal was to strengthen the role of healthcare social workers and increase consideration of psychosocial aspects in healthcare. (Less)
