Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
Seven interviews were conducted to explore how dissociation is experienced among transgender people and, if so, how dissociation is related to gender dysphoria. The participants consisted of transgender people who have had at least one dissociative experience, which they would then describe during the interview. The material was analyzed through a realistic thematic analysis, where similarities between the participants experiences were summerized. There were several similarities between the dissociative experiences the participants described: almost all felt themselves disconnected from their body as a whole (in contrast to feeling disconnected to a specific body part), or from the world around them and/or themselves; five acted out... The participants consisted of transgender people who have had at least one dissociative experience, which they would then describe during the interview. The material was analyzed through a realistic thematic analysis, where similarities between the participants experiences were summerized. There were several similarities between the dissociative experiences the participants described: almost all felt themselves disconnected from their body as a whole (in contrast to feeling disconnected to a specific body part), or from the world around them and/or themselves; five acted out different personalities or felt emotionally numb when they were dissociating. Almost all described that their dissociation lessened after they started gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy. The participants tended to differentiate between dysphoric and dissociative experiences by emotional content: dysphoric experiences were more directly distressful, while dissociative experiences were more emotionally numb. The result shows that the connections between dissociation and gender dysphoria needs to be explored further. (Less)
