Abstract
This paper aims to investigate whether there is a difference in how news media
portrays refugees from Ukraine compared to refugees from Syria. The research
question is as follows: Are refugees from the Syrian civil war represented differently
in Swedish news media compared to refugees from the conflict in Ukraine—and (if
so) how? In order to address this question, a discourse analysis was conducted on two
articles from Aftonbladet and two articles from Svenska Dagbladet using Carol
Bacchi's analytical method, "What's the problem represented to be?" The study
concludes that the research question is answered, as there is a weak pattern suggesting
