Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
In this degree project, the occurrence of editorial articles about violent crimes, more specifically shootings, is examined in accordance with agenda-setting theory. According to this theory, the frequency of articles about particular topics, as well as the length and placement of such articles, can influence readers in such a way that the topics of these emphasized articles are perceived as more important. Furthermore, the content of articles about shootings is examined using critical discourse analysis (CDA). Through this method of analysis, discourses can be identified in texts such as editorial articles. Discourses can be seen as particular beliefs that influence how we interpret our social surroundings and each other. Discourses are... (More)

Discourses are constructed through the use of language and can thus be inferred from text and speech. Articles from three editorial media, published over a period of three months, are examined quantitatively. The main result of this study is that articles about shootings are clearly emphasized through, above all, the frequency of publication. It is also clear that this frequency cannot be explained solely by the actual occurrence of crime. This is due to the way that the three examined media's publications vary in relation to each other. Furthermore, a selection of these articles is also examined qualitatively. The main result of this study is that event-centered discourses and human-centered discourses are relatively common within the examined material. The usage of any of the discourses, however, often depends on the societal group being described – such as perpetrators, victims of crime, witnesses or government personnel. (Less)
