Abstract
This study aims to analyze the ongoing discourse on the migration-development nexus in Sweden since the transition of government in 2022. This study aims to analyze the ongoing discourse on the migration-development nexus in Sweden since the transition of government in 2022. Through a critical discourse analysis and from a securitization theory, the study seeks to examine the language and rhetoric utilized in political debates and policy decisions. The study adopts a qualitative approach, enabling an in-depth analysis with emphasis on the significance of language and therefore I will adopt a critical discourse analysis. The securitization of the migration debate can have profound social consequences. By portraying migrants as potential threats to Swedish national security, we risk reinforcing polarization and xenophobia. The Tidö Agreement and subsequent political proposals have concretized this discourse through practical measures such as revision of the asylum process and strengthened border controls. These measures reflect a clear ambition to strengthen the nation's security but risk obscuring other critical aspects of migration and development, such as human rights and social integration. The results of the analysis have demonstrated a clear trend where migration is no longer seen as a social or economic issue but increasingly as a security issue, particularly regarding migration from third countries. The migration issue has been securitized through rhetoric that portrays migration as a source of social unrest and security risks, which legitimizes stricter migration policies. (Less)
