Even though the discourse was probably civilized for its time, there is a standardized and normalized use of language about homosexuals where homosexuals are generally described and associated with words that give a negative portrayal of homosexuals and being homosexual. This negative use of language connected to homosexuals had real consequences and the ideas they gave about homosexuals were a source of various forms of oppression; and still are today. (Less)
