- Abstract
- The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the media narrative on International Women's Day constructs women as a group. We focus on the years 2014 and 2023, using the evening paper Aftonbladet as our source. The review of previous research reveals that the International Women's Day has rarely been addressed in scholarly contexts, which is a significant motivation for the paper's direction. Simultaneously, we draw on Gauntlett's and Jarlbro's research on gender issues in media.
Through a narratological analysis, we find that female success and the progression toward a more equal society are important themes in the 2014 material. The review of previous research reveals that the International Women's Day has rarely been addressed in scholarly contexts, which is a significant motivation for the paper's direction. Through a narratological analysis, we find that female success and the progression toward a more equal society are important themes in the 2014 material. In contrast, the texts from 2023 focus on economic issues and are more inclined to place women as a group in a passive victim position. Utilizing the concepts of queer and performativity as interpretive tools, we deepen the analysis, pointing out how women are often constructed based on their relationship to men in the media narrative. Additionally, we demonstrate that sexuality is a vague theme in the material, discussed in the context of Butler's heterosexual matrix. In the concluding discussion, we deliberate on the purpose of March 8th and the media's responsibility for nuanced reporting on gender issues. (Less)
