Abstract (Swedish)
Factors regarding the therapist is an important field within modern psychotherapy research. Furthermore, in recent years authenticity has been more acknowledged within psychological research. In the light of this we wanted to deepen the understanding, and provide thick descriptions, of psychologists’ experiences of authenticity in therapy. Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with psychologists with experience of individual therapy. The participants were asked to describe their understanding of authenticity. The data was transcribed and analyzed with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. This resulted in five main themes: Society, organization and the profession, The humane therapeutic setting, A real relationship, The authentic experience and The price and burden of authenticity. Authenticity was shown to be an important aspect of the psychologists’ experiences of therapy, and meant that they allowed their own feelings and could feel as a whole human beings. Authenticity was addressed as a personal trait, as actions and as an approach. Furthermore authenticity was experienced as something that deepened the therapeutic relationship and made therapeutic work meaningful. It was also associated with enhanced presence. The conditions allowing authenticity were experienced to be influenced by society, the workplace and the professional expectations. The therapeutic work was described as playing a role, which could be perceived as authentic if it was closely related to ones’ own self. The study highlights the relevance of authenticity in a therapeutic context. Further research on authenticity is recommended alongside an increased interest within the profession. (Less)
