Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Psykisk ohälsa mättes med Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire och kroppstillfredsställelse mättes med delskalan Appearance ur Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults. (Less)
Abstract
In a time of extensive mental health problems and constantly pressing social norms regarding body ideals, adolescence is a critical period. The current discussion concerning the worsening of adolescents' mental health is alarming and indicates a growing need to study this more closely. This study aimed to examine whether there has been a change among 13-14-year-olds concerning mental health and body satisfaction during the last 16 years, and whether the association between these variables has changed during this time frame. Gender differences were also examined. Conducted as part of a research project at Lund University, this study drew data from surveys administered in 2007 and 2023 to students in years 7 and 8 (N = 1853) within a... (More)

This study aimed to examine whether there has been a change among 13-14-year-olds concerning mental health and body satisfaction during the last 16 years, and whether the association between these variables has changed during this time frame. Gender differences were also examined. Conducted as part of a research project at Lund University, this study drew data from surveys administered in 2007 and 2023 to students in years 7 and 8 (N = 1853) within a municipality in southern Sweden. Mental health problems were measured with Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and body satisfaction was measured with the Appearance subscale from Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults. The results indicated significant deteriorations in both mental health and body satisfaction, and the correlation between these variables was significantly stronger in 2023 than in 2007. This difference was mainly due to the significant worsening of girls' well-being. The study thus shows alarming results regarding the increase in mental health problems and body dissatisfaction in girls over the past 16 years. Clinicians as well as parents should pay attention to this, and further studies should be conducted to investigate explanatory models and preventive work. (Less)
