- Abstract
- The primary aim of this study has been to deepen the understanding of the experiences associated with growing up under the influence of an alcoholic mother, the consequences it can have on individuals as grownups, and identify potential factors that can affect the process of moving on in life. The study's empirical material consists of five biographies written by individuals who have experienced growing up with an alcoholic mother. Analysis within this study rests upon two foundational theories; Goffman's theory of stigma as well as Lazarus & Folkman's coping theory which have been used to create an understanding of the

(More) - The primary aim of this study has been to deepen the understanding of the experiences associated with growing up under the influence of an alcoholic mother, the consequences it can have on individuals as grownups, and identify potential factors that can affect the process of moving on in life. The study's empirical material consists of five biographies written by individuals who have experienced growing up with an alcoholic mother. Analysis within this study rests upon two foundational theories; Goffman's theory of stigma as well as Lazarus & Folkman's coping theory which have been used to create an understanding of the

This research endeavors to contribute to a heightened awareness of a prevalent societal issue, acknowledging the unsafe environment in which children of alcoholic parents often find themselves. The study's key findings corroborate previous research, affirming that children raised in environments fraught with alcohol abuse often grapple with profound emotions of loneliness, shame, and a pervasive urge to conceal their mother's addiction. The long-term consequences of an up-bringing with an alcoholic mother consist of feelings of shame and guilt as well as a lack of self-esteem. The authors highlight pivotal factors that facilitated their process of healing and moving beyond their past, including achieving success in their careers,
seeking the acknowledgment that eluded them during childhood, and embracing the autonomy to live life on their terms. (Less)
