Abstract
Conversations with children have always been relevant in social work. Conversation cards are decks of cards that can represent many different things, and they are a help to the child and social worker in their communication. The cards can, for example, represent images of bears that express different emotions, but there are also card decks that represent people, situations, or text that the social worker and child can converse about. Via the cards, the child is enabled to show the social worker how they feel and what they think about different areas in their life. In this study, we wanted to put into words how the conversation cards are used, what effects conversation cards have on the children, and what challenges there are with using the... (More)

Via the cards, the child is enabled to show the social worker how they feel and what they think about different areas in their life. In this study, we wanted to put into words how the conversation cards are used, what effects conversation cards have on the children, and what challenges there are with using the cards. We have used five semi-structured interviews with social workers who use or have used conversation cards in their professional conversations with children. Findings show that via the cards, the child is enabled to communicate with the social worker and show the social worker how they feel and what they think about different areas in their life. The cards are shown to be effective in helping the child express their feelings. The cards also help in creating a child-friendly environment and strengthen the alliance between the social worker and the child. The cards can also be used in other ways, and it is only the social worker and the child who can put an end to the many ideas on how the cards can be used. (Less)
