Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between participation and involvement in student nations and students’ sense of coherence (SOC) from a health promotion perspective. SOC has in previous studies been shown to benefit from supportive social relationships and environments, and has a strengthening effect on mental health. The present explorative study was conducted as a web-based survey aimed at students at Lund University (n=81). Statistical analyses like correlation analyses and logistic regression were performed. The results showed that one in two students reported probable anxiety, while one in eight reported probable depression. Participation and involvement in student nation activities were... (More)

Participation and involvement in student nation activities were associated with a higher SOC and lower odds of depression. Furthermore, the associations between participation and involvement and lower odds of depression weakened and no longer showed statistical significance after adjustments for SOC. This could be interpreted as the associations with depression being to some extent conveyed by differences in SOC. The study might contribute to an increased understanding of the importance of students’ SOC, and its potential health-promoting effect on mental health. However, the findings must be interpreted with caution as there are weaknesses with the study. Future studies should use a broader perspective taking into account also other factors, including health-promoting factors even outside of student nations, as well as possible negative effects from student nation participation and commitment. Possible implications of the findings could be to draw attention to health-promoting social activities aimed at university students to improve their wellbeing. (Less)
