Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate men's experiences of being subjected to domestic violence by their female partners, identify the consequences of this violence, and analyse barriers to seeking help or leaving the relationship. The goal is to understand the nature of the violence and its impact on the men involved. Two theories have been used to analyse the results: Goffman’s theory about stigmatisation and shame as well as the normalisation process in the context of domestic violence. The documents were chosen by a target-driven selection where all men had in common that they had published information about their experiences regarding being victims of domestic violence by their female partner. Some representatives published an autobiography and one attended an interview on a TV show. We have been able to answer our questions with the help of document analysis. The material from the documents were read or listened to, coded, and themed to be analyzed through a thematic analysis. Our results show that these men found it very physically and mentally draining to endure violence daily, which includes living in constant fear, and isolation and always pleasing their partner's wishes. The consequences of the daily abuse led these men to become substance abusers, have suicidal thoughts, and serious mental health issues, it was also common to mistrust their judgment. The main reason these men did not leave or reach out for help at first was because of the societal shame and guilt, the stigmatisation of being a male victim, having children with their perpetrator, or simply because they got used to the violence due to the normalisation process. Future studies could focus on how to destigmatize being a male victim of domestic abuse along with navigating the motive and mindset of the female perpetrator. (Less)
