- Abstract
- The editorial usage of stock images solves publishing challenges of illustrating news that are not connected to specific events. At the same time it contributes to an increasing vagueness and detachment between image content and the news story. This paper analyses the use of stock images in news journalism covering finance and the economy, specifically in the financial section of the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Stock images are analysed from a multimodal perspective, with a basis in semiotics, and by discussing them in relation to news value, credibility and publicational conditions. In our study we find that new types of images have become established in financial journalism, openly displaying their deviation from traditional, realistic images in terms of both image content and stylistic choices. In this way, the images shift what in a multimodal analysis is referred to as their ‘orientation of interpretation’ (kodningsorientering), moving away from the photojournalistic norm of naturalism. This study shows how the use of stock,
or stereotypical, images is strongly connected to conditions of media production, such as the demands of online publishing, the dominance of news agencies and a division of newsroom resources based on the perceived news value of a story.
By connecting the increased reliance on stock images to a shift in visual communication and cues, this paper shows that the use of stock images also challenges the visual norms of news media, and simultaneously risks undermining the credibility of both photojournalism in particular and journalism in general.
