Abstract
The purpose of conducting our qualitative interview study was to create an understanding of the social worker's room for action during investigation, assessment, and interventions in addiction treatment. We chose to compare addiction treatment in two municipalities to highlight similarities and differences in the social secretary's work with assessment, investigation, and interventions. The empirical material was collected through semi-structured interviews. The selection consists of four social workers and two unit managers. The material was then analyzed through a thematic analysis. Our result showed that the social worker's leeway can give both advantages and disadvantages to the client depending on several different factors. Our... (More)

The material was then analyzed through a thematic analysis. Our result showed that the social worker's leeway can give both advantages and disadvantages to the client depending on several different factors. Our theoretical starting points are concepts linked to action theory and organizational theory; space for action, street-level bureaucrat, collaboration, and isomorphism. The concepts influence each other, which highlights how the work of social workers is controlled in several different ways. Previous research highlights the importance of the client being understood based on their situation and how they feel and understand their addiction can affect the social worker's work. The organization's governance with guidelines and frameworks for the work, as well as collaboration with other actors in the field, form a picture of how the room for action is affected from several directions (Less)
