The aim was also to analyze and compare the results from Abbott’s theory of professions and Goffman’s theory of stigma. A qualitative study of ten individual interviews was conducted and a thematic analysis was implemented. In the analysis and the comparison between the professions from Abbott’s theory of professions and Goffman’s theory of stigma, this study found both differences and similarities emerged based on the professions’ different jurisdictions. Both school counselors and school nurses had broad perceptions of overweight and obesity in children, including stigma. The results made clear that overweight and obesity in children foremost is included within the school nurses’ jurisdiction and the profession focuses primarily on the children’s physical health. The school counselor's jurisdiction in the area includes mental health and value-based work. Both professions believed that they could promote health among children with overweight and obesity to some extent, within their different professional jurisdictions. The professions’ jurisdictions affected school counselors’ and school nurses’ opportunities to promote health and stigma emerged as a complicating factor for the two professions. This study has therefore attempted to highlight the importance of increased collaboration concerning children with overweight and obesity between both professions and within student health, and school personnel in general. There is an urgent need to decrease the stigma against these children and increased knowledge is therefore necessary, both among the professions and in society. One way to achieve this could be to start mentioning overweight and obesity in student health meetings. Furthermore, a change is needed concerning the qualifications and expectations regarding school counselors’ and school nurses’ professional roles in student health regarding overweight and obesity in children. This could change their jurisdictions on the issue and increase the professions’ opportunities to promote health in children with overweight and obesity. Thus, education and more specific guidelines for the professions are needed. (Less)
