Abstract
Over-indebtedness is a growing societal issue, however, the connection to suicidal behaviour is not well-researched. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate psychological factors that are related to suicide attempts among 641 over-indebted individuals in Sweden. Inclusion criteria were being indebted and having been subject to debt collection measures and/or seizure orders by the Swedish Enforcement Authority. Participants answered questions regarding demographic variables, debt size, anxiety and depression, financial strain, coping ability, emotions during indebtedness (Impact of Debts), and hopelessness. Participants were divided into two groups based on whether they had attempted suicide or not. Between-group differences were... (More)

Between-group differences were examined using independent samples t-tests. Associations were explored using Chi-square tests for independence. Among participants who had attempted suicide, more were single (χ2= (1, N = 630) = 12.04, p<.001, ɸ = 0.14) and had lower income (χ2 = (1, N = 563) = 8.22, p=.004, ɸ = 0.13). Binary logistic regression models were used to examine how psychological variables were related to suicide attempts. The results found that maladaptive coping was related to suicide attempts when controlling for depression, emotions during indebtedness and hopelessness, respectively. Anxiety and depression were also significantly related to suicide attempts. Logistic regression models also showed that financial strain was related to suicide attempts when controlling for anxiety and debt size, respectively. The results suggest that maladaptive coping strategies among over-indebted individuals may be a crucial risk factor for suicide attempts that suicide prevention efforts may benefit from. Longitudinal and registry studies are imperative to understand the long-term negative effects of over-indebtedness. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
