- This study investigates Mesolithic pits in Sweden with a focus on their possible functions and meanings. Pits from four Mesolithic sites are explored and analysed. The pits are studied and compared on factors such as placement, contents and size. A practice theory perspective is used in analysing the possible social and cultural meanings of the pits. Different sequences of actions related to the pits are analysed such as the pit digging, usage and the infilling of the pits, in order to understand the possible functions and meanings. The analysis show variability in the size and the contents of the pits. Further, pit digging is in some cases understood as possibly meaningful and differentiated between pits of different sizes.
