The aim of this thesis is to gain an understanding of how EU perceives the free movement in relation to sustainability and the climate related issues derived from European transports. To reach the objectives, two EU climate documents have been examined through a discourse analytical What’s the problem represented to be? approach together with a conceptual framework based on the interweaving of the concepts of freedom, mobility and sustainability. The study shows that EU places its emphasis on a sustainable transition of the transport sector but doesn’t discuss whether the principle of free movement should be revaluated or not. A conclusion that can be drawn from the results is that EU withholds a negative understanding of freedom. (Less)
