Abstract
Submarines constitute an important part of modern navies around the world. As
they are systems with a high level of complexity, the production phase of a
submarine is long and prone to flaws. The earlier these flaws are detected, the less of an impact they have monetarily and on the production timeline.

SAAB Kockums build submarines in sections, in which platforms are mounted
with equipment on them. The goal of this project was to provide a testing and

verification plan to be used in early stages of production to prevent system design faults or manufacturing flaws to pass by until the latter stages of production. Within the scope of the project, a testing and verification plan including equipment, testing metrics and boundary conditions was to be created for a part of a subsystem situated on one platform.

During an evaluation process, the chilled water subsystem was identified as the
most suitable candidate for the project. The chilled water subsystem cools
freshwater and circulation pumps create a flow to heatsinks in various components
around the boat. For the testing and verification plan, any parts extending outside of the platform boundary were replaced with orifice plates to mimic the pressure drop of the full subsystem.

The final testing and verification plan included prerequisites, preparations and the execution of the testing and verification. The goal is to verify flows in different pipes to see whether they exceed the lowest acceptable threshold.

At the conclusion of the thesis project, the project was ready to advance into
implementation in the production facilities, and as such the goal of the thesis
project had been achieved. (Less)

The world of submarines is complex. Operating in some of the most hostile environments, their strategic impact is so great that it may tip the scales in a conflict. Sweden relies heavily on its submarines to achieve deterrence by punishment, where a foreign adversary should refrain from engaging in armed conflict with Sweden due to the potential losses associated with it. The Swedish
Armed Forces rely on industry to provide them the tools, and as such any delays have an impact on Sweden’s ability to protect its sovereignty.

A submarine may be referred to as a system, which in turn consists of many subsystems. The purpose of a subsystem is to provide a function which supports the objective of the system. An example of a subsystem would be ventilation. Its function is to remove carbon dioxide and enrich the air with oxygen, as well as circulate the air within the submarine. This in turn allows the crew to operate in the submarine for a longer time without having to surface, which contributes to the system performance.

Production is often the most arduous part of a product development process. Most large-scale projects are delayed and over budget before they even leave the drawing table. Production errors can compound and severely impact deadlines. Submarines are no exception, if anything they are among the worst. The thousands of pipes compacted into a large, yet incredibly dense tube creates a web of
potential mishaps. Perhaps there is a proven way to mitigate some of the production problems?

One may look to the skies for inspiration. In the aviation and space industries, it is common practice to test the different subsystems before the product is assembled, that is the airplane or the space vessel. This ensures that the subsystems are in working condition and live up to their requirements. The
approach of partial testing may prove to have great potential beneath the surface.

By introducing a testing and verification approach in an earlier stage of production, engineers can root out issues before they have a significant impact on the project. It may also work as a validation tool for the design tools used during pre-production activities. Implementation of this process may aid in getting keels in the water at a faster rate. Submarines belong at sea, not in a shipyard.

The early testing and verification approach may be novel in this application, but it holds great promise and may serve as a guiding light for future submarine projects and their production processes. To avoid becoming textbook examples of the Dunning-Kruger effect, we must learn what we don’t know about our systems before we may have true confidence in our production capability. (Less)
