Abstract
There is a lack of knowledge about the effects that arise for the Swedes who write or receive a military order that is written in their second language.
This essay aims to investigate the effects of writing orders in English instead of Swedish to Swedish recipients and why the navy writes orders in English to Swedish recipients.
In order to gain a deep insight into the problem, qualitative conversational interviews were conducted with seven centrally placed officers within Maritime Operations. With the help of content analysis, the answers were evaluated to give a picture of the problem.

The main conclusions that were drawn were that it usually takes longer time to write orders in English, this in a context where time is of the greatest importance. Some Swedish words, mainly administrative words and professional words, have no English translation and some of the officers perceives a difference in meaning between Swedish and the English tactical tasks.
Some effects that the results show cannot be removed, but can be mitigated through, for example, education, other effects can be removed by publications clearly defining words and expressions in both English and Swedish. This essay can contribute as support for creating such solutions. (Less)
