Abstract (Swedish)
Fallstudien är en kvalitativ innehållsanalys inspirerad av Carol Bacchis artikel What’s the Problem Represented to be? (More)

(Less)
Abstract
This study analyses four Swedish news channels’ depiction of the protest group Återställ Våtmarker (EN: Restore Wetlands) during the course of the year 2023. The analysed outlets are Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter (DN), Sveriges Radio (SR) and Sveriges Television (SVT). In total, a number of 112 articles have been analysed. The study discusses what effect the depiction of Återställ Våtmarker has had on the consumer of the news. The method used in this qualitative study is inspired by the book What’s the Problem Represented to be? by Carol Bacchi. Through the use of the WPR-analysis, a number of aspects of the coverage has been studied. Among them the language used, the recurring frames and discourse in the coverage and the power dynamics.

The study is based on the theory of a “protest paradigm”, a routinized way of covering protesting in media. The idea of a protest paradigm is well-established in journalistic studies; however, its relevance has been questioned in the last years. The scattered views on the relevance of the “protest paradigm” today show the need of a modern case study that analyses news reporting in Sweden specifically. The study also analyses how the history and political designation of news channels influence their coverage of protests.
The result of the study demonstrates the differences in protest coverage between the evening tabloid Aftonbladet, the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter and the two public service channels SR and SVT. However, the study also shows that the protest paradigm is still strong in protest coverage across all four platforms. Coverage in all the studied news channels was characterized by over-simplifications of complex matters, sensationalism and lack of contextualisation. On the other hand, some signs of progress can be seen, especially in the longer commentaries and radio and television features that offer a deeper understanding. In the studied material there are a number of examples where the journalist shows a willingness to offer background to the conflict, an intent to develop and expand on the actors different roles in the conflict and to create a more open environment for discussion and debate.
The study also shows that protest reporting will face new challenges in the coming years, such as the medialisation of protest groups, which leads these groups to use more drastic methods to get attention by the media. (Less)
