Abstract
This master's thesis delves into the role of humanitarian engineering interventions in fostering community empowerment. Focusing on two case studies in Tanzania conducted by Engineers Without Borders Sweden (EWB-SWE), the research provides a comprehensive analysis of the impacts, challenges, and opportunities associated with such interventions. Drawing on literature from community empowerment, humanitarian engineering, and Amartya Sen's capability approach, the study employs a multidisciplinary framework to unravel the intricate dynamics involved. Methodologically, qualitative research methods, including semi-structured interviews, are employed to gather insights. The findings underscore the multifaceted impacts of interventions on... (More)

The findings underscore the multifaceted impacts of interventions on communities, emphasizing the interconnectedness of infrastructure projects with broader socio-economic contexts. Additionally, the study highlights the pivotal role of community participation, contextual factors, and conversion factors in shaping intervention outcomes. The thesis concludes by offering implications for theory, practice, and future research in the realm of humanitarian engineering and community development. (Less)
