Abstract
The increasing importance of mode selection in supply chain management, driven by factors such as globalisation, environmental concerns and safety requirements, has led Power Electronics to re-evaluate its current reliance on road freight transportation within the United States. In response to the growing awareness of sustainability, Power Electronics intends to explore the viability of rail transport as an alternative and compare its performance with current road transport. The thesis sets out to evaluate the performance of rail freight transport in comparison to road transport, specifically for Power Electronics’ inverters in the United States. The research questions focus on road transport’s current performance, rail freight transport’s... (More)
The increasing importance of mode selection in supply chain management, driven by factors such as globalisation, environmental concerns and safety requirements, has led Power Electronics to re-evaluate its current reliance on road freight transportation within the United States. The research questions focus on road transport’s current performance, rail freight transport’s efficiency in the USA and a comprehensive comparison of the two modes. To answer these questions, the study employs a case study with an abductive approach, focusing on the transportation system within the US. Data were collected through a thorough literature review, archival examination and interviews and subjected to rigorous cross-case analysis to meet the overall objectives of the thesis. The environmental impact analysis comparing rail and road freight transport indicates that rail transport has a smaller environmental footprint. Consequently, the results suggest that rail transport may be an environmentally preferable option for Power Electronics within the US. (Less)
