This study examines the debate surrounding propositions of legalization of cannabis in Oregon and Pennsylvania through an argument analysis. This study examines the debate surrounding propositions of legalization of cannabis in Oregon and Pennsylvania through an argument analysis. The arguments are categorized into health, freedom, and economic perspectives. Analyzing the discourse reveals prevalent individual-focused arguments, such as health risks associated with cannabis use and personal freedom to use cannabis in one's own home, alongside economic considerations like tax revenue and job creation. While Oregon and Pennsylvania both address health and traffic related concerns, Pennsylvania emphasizes economic benefits more extensively, including tourism revenue while Oregon emphasizes issues with public funding. The debate in Pennsylvania appears less extensive compared to Oregon, possibly due to limited public engagement. Future research could benefit from a historical perspective to elucidate legislative frameworks and societal factors shaping the debate. This study exclusively focuses on inter-state argumentative differences, leaving scope for broader contextual exploration in future inquiries. Overall, the thesis underscores the multifaceted nature of the cannabis legalization discourse in these states. (Less)
