Abstract
The City of Malmö is actively working with Agenda 2030 to increase sustainability within the city. The work with Agenda 2030 is based on the city’s environmental program, which includes an overarching goal to improve the living environment for its residents. With this as a background, this paper examines the living environment of two regions in Malmö, Rosengård and Västra Hamnen. Given their differing socioeconomic statuses, where Rosengård has a lower socioeconomic status than Västra Hamnen, comparing these regions provides insight into the presence of environmental justice in the city. Environmental justice claims that the heaviest environmental burdens are placed on marginalized and disadvantaged groups and that it is primarily the poor... (More)
The City of Malmö is actively working with Agenda 2030 to increase sustainability within the city. Environmental justice claims that the heaviest environmental burdens are placed on marginalized and disadvantaged groups and that it is primarily the poor and the most powerless individuals who lack a healthy environment. Hence, the theoretical framework for this study is environmental justice. The study analyzes parts of Malmö’s environmental program, with a focus on goals that have an impact on the citizens’ living environment. Elements that are investigated include exposure to environmental pollutants, availability of green areas, and availability of the mobility system. By following a comparative case study, the study finds a correlation between lower socioeconomic status and poorer living environments, except for green areas. (Less)
