Abstract
Self-disclosure is a therapeutic intervention that is described as one of the most helpful tools in a treatment process. Self-disclosure implies that a person shares personal information or experiences about themselves to their client or when it´s used as an immediate response towards the client in the therapy room. The aim of the study was to investigate psychotherapists' experiences of self-disclosure in therapeutic sessions and its impact on the therapy process. The study also aimed to investigate how the psychotherapists used their own experiences of self-disclosure from therapeutic context. The selection consisted of seven therapists with different theoretical perspectives. The data from individual semi- structured interviews were... (More)

The study also aimed to investigate how the psychotherapists used their own experiences of self-disclosure from therapeutic context. The selection consisted of seven therapists with different theoretical perspectives. The data from individual semi- structured interviews were analysed by thematic analysis. The interview analyses revealed six themes that described the respondents’ experiences of self-disclosure. The result showed that all respondents used self-disclosure in different amounts and in different ways. The experience was that self-disclosure mostly has a positive effect on the therapy process if used in a sensible way. The respondents also described situations where self-disclosure harmed the relationship to the client or affected the situation in a negative way. It emerged that all therapists reflect on negative experiences but in different ways. This resulted in integration of a new knowledge on how self-disclosure could be used. The result gave the picture of an intervention that is autodidactic. Each therapist developed their own style based on personal preference, personality, experience, reflection, and courage. The study revealed that many micro skills that a therapist need to possess to be able to use self-disclosure in an adequate way. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
