- Abstract
- Generative AI has been a topic of much discussion within society at large. Museums as cultural institutions have not been exempted from this discussion and its effects. Several institutions within North America and Europe having already developed and introduced AI to its functions, Swedish museums however seem to remain behind in this development. This paper thus aims to study how AI has been used within several Swedish museums and how this can further develop. Previous research has focused on the ethical concerns surrounding AI in a sociocultural institution such as museums. These concerns have been centered on the potential for AIs to recreate prejudiced opinions or the relationship between technology and creator. I contacted and... (More)

I contacted and interviewed six different museums about their projects. These interviews were then used as the basis for a comparative analysis which aimed to highlight the similarities and differences between how each museum approached the topic of AI-technology. What the study found was that the Swedish museums primarily used AI within the public functions of the museums, either as chatbots or as part of an exhibit. AI was also never developed internally as the institutions lacked capacity to do so. Instead, the technology used at each of the six museums was developed by an external company which collaborated with the museum. The last conclusion was that usage of AI should be viewed as a continuation of an existing digitization process and not as an independent development. (Less)
