Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The psychotherapist profession is stimulating, meaningful and exciting, but can also give the psychotherapist negative physical and emotional symptoms of burnout and reduced ability to empathize with their patients. This is called compassion fatigue and can affect psychotherapists who meet patients with trauma. The purpose of this study was to investigate what knowledge psychodynamic psychotherapists had regarding the concept of compassion fatigue and how they practiced self-care. We interviewed six experienced psychotherapists with psychodynamic backgrounds. The data collection was done through semi-structured interviews. These were then compiled through interpretative phenomenological analysis. Here, four themes emerged: awareness,... (More)

Here, four themes emerged: awareness, knowledge, risk factors for compassion fatigue and self-care. Our results showed that several of the informants were not familiar with the concept of compassion fatigue before, but they were familiar with the meaning of the concept. Furthermore, our results indicated that the importance of self-care is essential as it helps to avoid suffering from compassion fatigue. The results of the analysis revealed the importance of collegial support, supervision and personal therapy as other aspects of how to counteract negative aspects that can arise from helping others. Our conclusion is that the knowledge of compassion fatigue among the informants is limited but that the awareness of self-care is greater. (Less)
