Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Over-indebtedness is related to various forms of health problems, including suicidal behavior. The Budget and Debt Counselling Service (BUS) is one of the few agencies that offers this group help through financial advice. However, little is known about their clientele. In research, low social support has been related to suicide, but the relationship is unknown in over-indebted people. The aim of this cross-sectional study (N=641) was to investigate the relationship between social support and suicide attempts in over-indebted, especially those who have been in contact with BUS. Furthermore, it was studied whether proven risk factors for suicide and perceived help from BUS related to the association. All participants were registered with the... (More)

The aim of this cross-sectional study (N=641) was to investigate the relationship between social support and suicide attempts in over-indebted, especially those who have been in contact with BUS. Furthermore, it was studied whether proven risk factors for suicide and perceived help from BUS related to the association. All participants were registered with the Swedish Enforcement Authority. Initially, group differences were studied between participants (1) who had received help from BUS and (2) those who had not been in contact with BUS. Small but significant differences regarding gender and duration of debt were measured. When the associations between quantitative and qualitative measures of social support and suicide attempts were investigated through bivariate correlation analysis, small but significant correlations were identified. Later, when binary logistic regressions were conducted, only the quantitative measure was significantly related to suicide attempts when both measures of social support were combined. When controlling for living alone, an established risk factor correlating with suicide attempts in the sample, the association with suicide attempts remained significant. Practical implications of the results as well as suggestions for future research were discussed. (Less)
