A literature review and semi-structured interviews employed through a mixed-methods approach explores the challenges for the protection of Old-growth forests in Sweden. A political ecology lens focusing on interactive governance examines the power structures within Swedish forest management. The findings point to a polarised debate where the Swedish Forestry Model and the interests of the forestry industry are favoured at the expense of the protection of Old-growth forests, illuminated through unbalanced power structures in forest management and a reserved attitude towards the influence of the EU. The thesis concludes with a glimpse towards a reformed interactive governance to ensure the protection of Old-growth forests in Sweden. (Less)
