- Abstract
- The primary aim of this master’s thesis is to provide a deeper insight into the archives of the Swedish Local Heritage Federation, and to what extent they can be compared to the established concepts of community archives. The secondary is to clarify differences between traditional archival institutions and the archives of the Swedish Local Heritage Federation to better understand how the latter operate.
An empirical foundation was created by sending out 108 qualitative questionnaires through strategic selection. They were sent out to four organizations from each region in which the Swedish Local Heritage Federation are divided. 36 of these were answered, 33%, and all respondents were anonymous.

An empirical foundation was created by sending out 108 qualitative questionnaires through strategic selection. They were sent out to four organizations from each region in which the Swedish Local Heritage Federation are divided. 36 of these were answered, 33%, and all respondents were anonymous.
The theoretical framework used was “the five principles”, a theory by Michelle Caswell summarized by what she has seen in the majority of community archives she has been studying throughout the years. These five principles are also what makes a successful community archive, according to Caswell. The theory was used to analyze the answers from the respondents and to better clarify to what extent the Swedish Local Heritage Foundation archives can be compared to community archives.
The results show there are a lot of similarities between community archives and the Swedish Local Heritage Foundation archives. It can be clearly stated that the Swedish Local heritage Foundation are like small communities, and they have archives. But there are two big differences. The lack of activism and their focus on protect and carry on the history, culture, traditions, memory, and cultural heritage are not typical for community archives. The similarities are of absolute majority, but community archives and the Swedish Local Heritage Foundation archives are not the same thing.
Differences between traditional archival institutions and the archives of the Swedish Local Heritage Federation exist, but they are too few to conclude anything other than that they do exist. There are both similarities and differences. Although, this study helped clarify how the archives of the Swedish Local Heritage Federation operate. (Less)
