Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate how family therapists reason and reflect on the involvement of bonus parents (also known as stepparents) in family therapy. The research questions are 1) what considerations are made regarding the involvement of bonus parents? 2) what kind of role does the bonus parent have in the therapy? 3) What working models are used in family therapy with bonus parents? 4) What experiences do family therapists have regarding gender roles and bonus parenting? The study is based on semi-structured interviews with eight professional family therapists. The theoretical framework draws upon systems theory and gender theory. The findings of the study indicate that it is primarily the custodial parents who are addressed... (More)

The study is based on semi-structured interviews with eight professional family therapists. The theoretical framework draws upon systems theory and gender theory. The findings of the study indicate that it is primarily the custodial parents who are addressed in family therapy within social services and healthcare. Whether bonus parents are involved depends on the family therapist’s experience and method, resources and depending on how the task and the mandate have been articulated. Three types of bonus parent roles are identified: the supportive, the outsider and the boundary setter. The study highlights the significance of the emotional bond between children and bonus parents in therapy. Furthermore, it demonstrates how family therapists in their practice utilize various working models to involve bonus parents in therapy. These models are based on the family's different subsystems and are referred to as the adult system, two-family system, and bonus parent-bonus child system. Finally, the study illuminates how gender roles and patterns can affect the role of the bonus parent. (Less)
