Abstract
Sleep problems are common in Sweden and insomnia is the most common diagnosis among sleep disorders. International guidelines recommend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) as first line treatment for insomnia. Access to treatment is limited and individuals with a mother tongue other than Swedish have less access to psychological treatment in general. Digital therapeutic interventions can increase access to equitable care because of their scalability and because they can be easily culturally adapted to ethnic minorities. FastAsleep is a digital self-help tool for treating insomnia based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This essay is a preparatory work for a study at the Karolinska Institute where the intention is to test... (More)

FastAsleep is a digital self-help tool for treating insomnia based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This essay is a preparatory work for a study at the Karolinska Institute where the intention is to test FastAsleep on adults living in Sweden with a mother tongue other than Swedish. In the essay, we have conducted interviews with nine stakeholders who encounter ethnic minorities or themselves belong to one. We have analyzed their answers in a thematic analysis based on the question which themes we can see in the answers from stakeholders about how digital therapeutic interventions can be adapted to reach out to and be helpful to people with a language background other than Swedish. In the analysis, we arrive at three overarching themes that need to be considered to reach and offer digital therapeutic treatment for insomnia to ethnic minorities. These themes are that a cultural understanding is necessary, that insomnia is to be understood individually and contextually and that digital interventions need to be adapted to ensure accessibility. Based on these themes, we discuss opportunities and difficulties with digital self-help programs like FastAsleep when these are aimed at individuals with a mother tongue other than Swedish. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
