Unveiling Economic Shifts in the United Kingdom Post-Brexit Referendum
(2024) NEKN01 20241Department of Economics
- Abstract
- This paper examines the economic impact of the 2016 Brexit referendum on the United Kingdom’s economy, focusing on indicators such as real GDP per capita growth and exports. Employing the Synthetic Difference-in-Differences estimation method, we construct a synthetic control unit which allows for an estimation of the treatment effect of the referendum. Our analysis reveals declining trends in real GDP per capita growth and exports following the Brexit referendum. Through this investigation, we contribute to the understanding of how household and firm uncertainty shapes economic outcomes, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making in order to dampen spill-over effects.
