- Abstract
- Popular involvement in Swedish society has gone through what can be described as a “death of associations”, a decreased participation in formal organizations. The involvement has not vanished, it merely seems to (partially) have changed shape to the benefit of less formal types of organizing, among others social movements. The informal structures raise questions about fundamental archival concepts like the principle of provenance, records creator and original order, and therefore also questions about obstacles towards long-term retention of social movement organizing archives. With this thesis I intend to further the knowledge about these obstacles. To do so five representatives of social movement organizing were interviewed. The... (More)
- Popular involvement in Swedish society has gone through what can be described as a “death of associations”, a decreased participation in formal organizations. The theoretical perspectives applied are classical archival theory setting the fundamentals of archiving, postmodern archival theory to contradict and balance those fundamentals as well as for questioning power structures, combined with social movement theory to grasp the contentiousness and networked structure of social movements.
The thesis analyses and presents a number of obstacles ranging within four main themes: 1) Motivation, 2) Provenance, dispersion and mandate, 3) Repression, and 4) Knowledge and infrastructure. Further a number of possible solutions to overcome the obstacles are presented and analyzed, including among other: aligning archiving with the aim of the movements (i.e. focus on future work and conflict); use provenance in a more generous way by following questions instead of records creators or more generously include to the archive; face worries of repression by applying terms to parts of the archive or retaining the archive outside of an archive institution for a period of time; and knowledge-enhancing efforts like an archiving manual for social movement organizing, study circles, or an archiving group for social movements.
