- Abstract
- The purpose of the study was to shed light on how experienced psychodynamic
psychotherapists address the topic of death in the psychotherapy room. Semistructured interviews were conducted with eight licensed psychodynamic
psychotherapists. Each therapist had more than twenty years of experience
practicing psychodynamic psychotherapy. The interview material was analyzed
using thematic analysis, resulting in four main themes: How the therapist

results of the study show that all therapists are affected by discussing death, but in different ways. Transparency regarding death is considered beneficial to the psychotherapeutic process. The therapist becomes more courageous, and the topic of death becomes less charged as the therapist ages and gains more experience. As therapists, they have been forced to confront where they stand on existential questions and how they position themselves in relation to death. They hope that future generations of therapists will not be as fearful in their practice and encourage seeing the patient as multifaceted. There is a consistent acknowledgment of the necessity for psychodynamic therapists to engage in personal therapy for their own self-development. The conclusion of the study is that the therapist's experience and maturity correlate with how they address the topic of death in the therapy room. Respondents express that with increased experience comes a more relaxed attitude, which they believe positively impacts the psychotherapy process. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
