- Abstract (Swedish)
- Youth intimate partner violence (Youth IPV) has long been an overlooked field of research, but an increasing number of recent studies are showing the extent and severity of the problem. Health care plays an important role in identifying Youth IVP, but there are no official guidelines regarding which profession within health care should have the responsibility, knowledge, or competence to identify Youth IPV. This study aims to explore how hospital social workers within child and youth healthcare reason about the task of asking patients about Youth IVP. The study was based on a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews conducted with ten professionals from the field. The empirical material was analyzed by using the theoretical... (More)

This study aims to explore how hospital social workers within child and youth healthcare reason about the task of asking patients about Youth IVP. The study was based on a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews conducted with ten professionals from the field. The empirical material was analyzed by using the theoretical concepts of jurisdiction and discretion, complemented by Bourdieu’s concepts of capital, field, and doxa as an analytical tool. The interviews showed that few hospital social workers routinely ask patients about exposure to Youth IVP, mainly due to a lack of knowledge regarding the problem and uncertainty of how to handle the answers. The hospital social workers' discretion is limited by the lack of knowledge but also by the absence of formal guidelines, organizational structures, and routines. Moreover, the focus on diagnoses often impacts the social workers' holistic approach and contributes to the risk of overlooking important aspects of young people's lives and missing the opportunity to identify Youth IPV.
