Sustainable occupations and health in a life course perspective
Abstract
Background: Many elderly people remain in their current homes, and for most,
home is often considered an important and meaningful place. With rising age,
elderly typically spend more time at home, making it the primary setting for daily activities. In occupational therapy, human occupation is central, and
participating in occupation promotes health. However, there is a lack of
summary of existing literature regarding older people’s experiences of their
home and its impact on daily activities.
Aim: The aim of this literature review is
to summarize existing research that focus on how older people experience their
homes and its impact on daily activities.

Aim: The aim of this literature review is
to summarize existing research that focus on how older people experience their
homes and its impact on daily activities.
Method: An integrative literature review with an inductive approach was conducted. Data analysis was conducted in four steps, and the studies were later categorized and summarized.
Results: Twelve studies were included from the databases CINAHL and PubMed, as well as secondary and person searches. The analyses resulted in a main category with five subcategories. The results showed that the home is perceived as a central place and that the experience of the home and its impact on daily activities is a dynamic interaction between person, environment, and occupation. The studies also showed that the participants experience their homes differently in relation to their daily activities.
Conclusion: The studies showed that the participants
experience their homes differently in relation to their daily activities, which is important knowledge for occupational therapists working with elderly people in community living settings. (Less)

(Less)
