EXISTENTIELL ÅNGEST FÖRE OCH UNDER PANDEMIN En kvalitativ studie om existentiell ångest i psykoterapier, utifrån semistrukturerade intervjuer med sex psykodynamiskt skolade terapeuter

- Abstract
- Being human involves confronting issues related to life and death, meaning and purpose, which can provoke discomfort and be perceived as burdensome, potentially leading to existential anxiety. The COVID-19 pandemic triggered these types of questions for many people, and mental health issues spread globally. Existential anxiety is not a psychiatric diagnosis, and there are no guidelines for its management. The purpose of this study was to explore existential anxiety in therapy rooms, both before and during the coronavirus pandemic, and how it was managed. The sample consisted of six psychodynamically trained psychotherapists. Data from individual semi-structured interviews were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. The analysis of the... (More)

The sample consisted of six psychodynamically trained psychotherapists. Data from individual semi-structured interviews were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. The analysis of the material resulted in seven themes, which aimed to describe the essence of the informants' narratives. The results showed that therapists recognized and had worked with existential anxiety in their patient interactions, and that they apprehended prevalence of this issue more frequent during the pandemic. The pandemic itself also presented challenges, both practical and emotional. Informants described feelings of inadequacy when dealing with patients' existential struggles, as well as a perception that these issues could provide an opportunity for growth and deepening for the patient. Difficulties arose from a lack of understanding of this perspective from the surrounding environment. This study emphasizes the importance of keeping the dialogue alive regarding what is pathological and when human reactions should be considered natural even though they involve pain and suffering. - Abstract (Swedish)
Analysen... (More)

(Less)
