Brandteknisk riskvärdering av Nova

Abstract
Nova is a popular shopping center in the west part of Lund in Skåne, Sweden. This report serves to analyze the general fire safety of Nova in regards to protection of people in the building. Based on statistics and a visit on site, nine different scenarios were identified and out of these the following three scenarios, that were deemed to have the highest risk, were chosen to analyze further based on a risk assessment that was conducted:

• Scenario A – Fire in clothing store
• Scenario B – Fire in kitchen
• Scenario C – Fire in storage room of a store.

Nova is a popular shopping center in the west part of Lund in Skåne, Sweden. This report serves to analyze the general fire safety of Nova in regards to protection of people in the building. Based on statistics and a visit on site, nine different scenarios were identified and out of these the following three scenarios, that were deemed to have the highest risk, were chosen to analyze further based on a risk assessment that was conducted:

• Scenario A – Fire in clothing store
• Scenario B – Fire in kitchen
• Scenario C – Fire in storage room of a store.

To assess how these scenarios influence the safety of people, a number of critical conditions were chosen that could not be exceeded. To assess if the three scenarios would exceed the critical conditions they were simulated with the simulation programs FDS and Pathfinder. FDS is used to simulate smoke spread from fires and Pathfinder is used to simulate evacuation times. To examine how some of the variables in the evacuation simulation influenced the result a sensitivity analysis was made where variables were varied. The results from the simulations showed that the general fire safety of Nova is satisfactory based on the specified critical conditions. Therefore, no changes are needed to the building in regards to fire safety, although some recommended measures have been advised. These measures could be made to ensure that the fire protection systems that are already installed are working optimally:

• Make sure that the sprinkler system follows the regulations, with regard to location and how close obstacles can be to the sprinkler, making sure the sprinkler does not get blocked.
