- Abstract
- The escalating crime rate in Sweden has become a pressing social issue, prompting a critical focus on assisting young men in disengaging from criminal gangs. We conducted a qualitative document analysis due to ethical concerns and practical constraints in accessing desisters within the timeframe of the study. Results reveal varied motivations for desistance among individuals, with common factors including threats and violence, personal maturity, and religious beliefs. Interestingly, only one participant discussed receiving social interventions, while others largely disengaged independently. The participants who received interventions had prior involvement with various agencies such as residential care facilities, social services, police, and a designated contact person through a social intervention group. Post-desistance, he engaged in a desistance program offering accommodation, sustenance, educational support, and assistance from personnel within the desistance initiative. The study draws upon theoretical frameworks including rational choice theory and push-and-pull factors to interpret findings. (Less)
