Abstract
Due to various political and economic crises around the world, the displacement of large populations has constituted one of the most important contemporary social problems; causing social tensions and conflicts between the “newcomers” (Them) and the local community (Us). In this context, media has played an important role in the construction of narratives that, in most cases, present immigrants in a negative way. Studies have shown that there is an underrepresentation and a negative portrayal of immigrants in the media. Thus, the research aims to understand how one of the largest displaced populations (Venezuelans) is represented by Peruvian right-leaning newspapers in the period 2017-2023. Studies have shown that there is an underrepresentation and a negative portrayal of immigrants in the media. Thus, the research aims to understand how one of the largest displaced populations (Venezuelans) is represented by Peruvian right-leaning newspapers in the period 2017-2023. By using the concept of framing, the goal is to identify which frames are used and how they change over time. To do that, a mixed-method approach was employed to analyze a corpus of 14,416 newspaper articles with computational and statistical techniques; complementing the results with a qualitative text analysis of a sample of the corpus. Results show that Venezuelans are portrayed mostly in a negative way associated with criminal activities. Also, the study found differences in time and gender, thus, while males are portrayed as criminal perpetrators, women are represented as victims of sexual violence. (Less)
