Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore and chart behavioral patterns and motives within problem gamblers in regards to understand why individuals become ensnared in the world of gambling with money. A qualitative netnographic method was used to gather data. The data gathered in the following study aims to answer the research questions, and thus making sure the purpose of the study is distinctly reached. This set of data was found using the online platform Reddit, and its’ subforum r/Problemgambling; a resource for individuals who struggles, have struggled and/or have connections with individuals who has/have struggled with a gambling problem. The aim of this study was to explore and chart behavioral patterns and motives within problem gamblers in regards to understand why individuals become ensnared in the world of gambling with money. This set of data was found using the online platform Reddit, and its’ subforum r/Problemgambling; a resource for individuals who struggles, have struggled and/or have connections with individuals who has/have struggled with a gambling problem. To analyze the data an approach of a thematic analysis was used. The results found that discussions on the forum was in line with previous research. Players get caught in a gambling problem when using it as a means to cope, escape, from everyday problems and from chasing their losses. The results found consequences linked to mental health problems, suicidal ideation and shame which have an impact on both the individual and their relations to friends and family. The thrill of gambling was a strong contributing factor to players not being able to quit gambling, and thus completing the endless cycle of gambling. (Less)
