- Abstract
- This study explores the role of research and development (R&D) in China's pursuit of increased economic growth and technological leadership. By examining China's initiative "Made in China 2025" (MIC 2025), we analyse how increased investment in R&D can impact the country's long-term economic progress. Our analysis indicates a significant increase in China's R&D spending, suggesting that the MIC 2025 initiative continues despite global tensions. While we cannot establish an immediate correlation between R&D spending and short-term economic growth, our research shows that such investments can have a positive impact in the longer term.

To avoid the middle-income trap and promote continued growth, a long-term strategy is required to promote R&D and technological development. MIC 2025 may be a key component of this strategy by enhancing China's competitiveness in the high-tech market and reducing its dependence on external actors. Our work underscores the importance of nurturing international relations and overcoming trade tensions to promote China's economic progress. By embracing a more high-tech production culture, China can position itself as a leading player in the global economy and reach new heights of growth and innovation. (Less)
