Abstract
The aim of the study was to examine classical music students' experiences of
practicing and learning classical music. Data was collected through semi-
structured interviews with nine music students studying classical music at
advanced level. The interviews were analyzed using a critical realist and
reflexive thematic analysis. The analysis resulted in four main themes: 1) No
motivation, no music 2) Quality over quantity 3) Learning music is more than
practicing a piece and 4) The dark side. Key findings were that participants
expressed that motivation was an important factor to continue practicing and
learning classical music. Deliberate practice focusing on planning, evaluating

expressed that motivation was an important factor to continue practicing and
learning classical music. Deliberate practice focusing on planning, evaluating
and staying focused worked well for students to learn and to prevent injury.
Studying the history of the musical piece, finding a unique musical expression,
and practicing performing appeared to be other key aspects of the participants'
learning process. Participants also experienced practicing repetitively and on
their own. Furthermore, participants felt that there was a norm of perfection in
classical music culture. The results suggested, in line with previous research
findings, that deliberate practice and motivation are important for acquiring
expertise in music. In accordance with previous research, focusing on emotional
expression when playing music was also positive for the learning process. In
contrast to previous studies, participants had some strategies to deal with
performance anxiety. Based on this, classical music students may benefit from
engaging in more playful practice, acquiring strategies to deal with self-
criticism, and having opportunities to practice with other classical musicians. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
Analysen utmynnade i fyra
huvudteman: 1) Ingen motivation, ingen musik 2) Kvalitet före kvantitet 3) Att
(More)

ytterligare centrala delar i deltagarnas lärandeprocess.
(Less)
