Abstract
In this master’s thesis, it is explored in what directions a market leading company with an established product portfolio can expand. Thereafter a concept is developed as an example of a niche product.

Firstly, a market screening is performed with regards to trends, competitor products and needs in different market segments. Moreover, the company’s strategy is taken into consideration with the strength and weakness it comes with. The goal with the screening is to identify new markets or niches that could be interesting for the company to develop products within.

In the case of this report, the product is loudspeakers developed by a company in the security and surveillance industry. The result is that many areas have great potential, and which area to invest in is mostly a strategic decision.

In the second phase of the project, a niche is chosen: train stations. From the research it emerged that some of the main issues for spoken communication are sound pollution and excessive information. At the same time, passengers demand more personal and relevant information. To proceed from this, a brief was formulated:

"Create a loudspeaker that can address information to people it is relevant for, while reducing information to those who it is not relevant for."

The final concept is a so called sound shower combined with Auracast. A sound shower is a speaker that uses modulated ultrasound to generate directed sound with low scattering. This would allow for information spots at stations, where passenger who wish to hear announcements can do so while the spread of sound to the surroundings is limited.

Auracast is a Bluetooth solution introduced in 2022. With Auracast, public announcements can be broadcasted to compatible hearing aids and headphones. Through Auracast it would therefore be possible to not only improve voice announcements to those with hearing disabilities, but also enable personalized announcements to people’s headphones. (Less)
